When he was arrested, he looked at the soldiers’ cameras and smiled
A few days after the spectacular action against Tyro Antonio Ottoniel Usuka, joy subsided in Colombia. The country is now puzzled by the background to the coup against the Clan del Golfo.
Happiness in Colombia slowly fades a few days after the arrest of drug lord Dior Antonio Ottoniel Usuka – while suspicions about the arrest and its circumstances are growing. Otoniel, considered the leader of the Clan del Golfo, may have been partly responsible for the smuggling of tons of cocaine from Colombia to the United States in recent years.
In addition, the Colombian is said to have been involved in murders, kidnappings and child abuse. Colombian authorities have been searching for the drug lord for years. But many attempts could not catch the ottoman.
While other cartel leaders lived in luxury and villas, Ottoniel hid in the woods. Among other things, he is said to have fed the slaughtered animals there, and there were bodyguards around him who had several safety rings. With great effort it was now possible to capture Otonyla: 500 soldiers were involved in the operation, 22 helicopters, 150 police officers.
It was the biggest success since Ottoniel was arrested Pablo Escobar in the mid-1990s President Ivan Duk said he was shot. Photos of the detainee were proudly distributed. However, these do not show the shocked or angry man, on the contrary: Ottoniel smiles at the camera.
This has now led to speculation as to whether the head of Clan del Golfo was actually hiding in his jungle – or whether he did not surrender to the authorities. In fact, many years ago Ottoniel volunteered to disband his organization. At that time peace efforts with left-wing guerrilla organizations in Colombia were just beginning.
Ottoniel probably wanted to take advantage of this change, perhaps because he had personally been tired of fighting and fleeing for decades: as a young man, he joined left-wing guerrillas and then switched to right-wing paramilitary groups. After all, he got into the drug trade.
Ottoniel is about to be extradited to the United States
Otonyl is now 50 years old, he is said to have a back problem, and even hid in the woods and slept on orthopedic mattresses. In addition, his power has waned in recent years. Perhaps, so speculations, the drug lord may have met.
This is being countered by the fact that the government has already announced that it will extradite Ottoniel to the United States – a fate that has befallen other employers, particularly Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman: the Mexican who has probably sat in the United States all his life for drug trafficking in the high security sector.
Ottoniel will do everything he can to prevent that from happening – and this could prompt him to work with the Colombian authorities and provide evidence of the organization of his organization and the crimes he committed. For the victims and their relatives in his home country, this will be an opportunity for legal reconsideration. It is doubtful how far even Otoneel’s cooperation will help in combating drug trafficking. (Read more material analysis The eternal war against drug traffickers has failed..)
The global demand for cocaine has not been broken, and Clan del Golfo’s smuggling routes and networks may remain the same even after their boss is arrested. So there is little doubt among experts that the business will continue unhindered. At the same time, there are fears that a bloody power struggle will erupt for his successor.
Sikido Malo is the new boss of Clan del Golfo
Colombia’s president will benefit greatly from his arrest: Evan Duke is a right-wing extremist who, despite all efforts, has failed to curb cocaine production. At the same time, his opinion polls are declining.
This is another reason why the Duke enthusiastically celebrates the arrest of Ottoniel: “This is the worst blow to organized drug trafficking in this country in this century,” the president said, adding that the next drug lord was already on the wanted list: Jesus Avila Villadico or Sigvido Malo, now Otoniel’s close associate and his nephew May be. “The message is clear: either surrender – or we will get you,” said the Colombian head of state.
