Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the situation has been tense. Especially since Russia is threatening the West – including with nuclear weapons. On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (46) said the US and other states had fueled the “intensification of the Ukrainian crisis”.
“Washington and its allies are dangerously poised on the brink of an open military conflict with our country – that means direct armed conflict between nuclear powers,” Zakharova added. It is only one threat among many.
And that’s why New York City responded. She wants to prepare people for a possible attack and has released a video explaining what to do in the event of a nuclear attack.
“New Yorkers must protect themselves”
The city’s emergency department explains in the video: “There was a nuclear attack. (…) What shall we do?»
However, in the next sentence, the woman becomes silent again. “While the possibility of a nuclear attack on New York is remote, New Yorkers need to know how to protect themselves.”
There are three very simple steps to this: quickly enter a building, stay in the building and wait for news. Going back out is absolutely not an option. The instruction is clear: “Don’t go out. Wait until you get permission from the authorities,” he said.
Staying in the car is also not a good idea. Either way: Anyone who was outside at the time of the attack should do one thing – wash up. “If you are outside after an explosion, wash immediately. Remove and pack all outer clothing to remove radioactive dust or ash from your body.”
People are also encouraged to go to basements if they have them. At the end of the video, the speaker cheerfully announces: “Okay. You’ve made it.”
There is no video on such behavior in Switzerland – the website of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) only describes how to take iodine tablets correctly. Additionally, every municipality in Switzerland has enough air raid shelters for the population.
Russia has repeatedly threatened nuclear retaliation
This is not the first time Russia has threatened the US with nuclear weapons. In May, Russian state media boasted that Putin could destroy the entire United States with four nuclear-capable missiles.
Last month, the Kremlin warned that Europe could be plunged into a nuclear disaster – a verbal attack in response to promises by Western allies to supply besieged Kiev with more weapons. (chs)
