Beijing’s long-standing distaste for Pelosi
Three American politicians placed three white flowers at the martyrs’ memorial. Chinese security officials entered. Since then, there has been an ice age between Beijing and Pelosi.
Pelosi took to Twitter to recall this historic visit and protest three years ago. “Twenty-eight years ago we traveled to Tiananmen Square,” he wrote, “to honor the courage and sacrifice of the students, workers and ordinary citizens who stood up for the dignity and human rights of all people. To this day, we are determined to share his story with the world.”
Since then, the Chinese government has made no secret of its disdain for Pelosi, and once condemned the Democratic Party for “lies and misinformation.”
Pelosi’s visit was not really exceptional
Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is not unusual. Representatives of the US Congress visit the country frequently. Pelosi is also not the first speaker of the US House of Representatives to visit an ally.
The question, then, is why Beijing seems determined to turn the visit into a crisis. The common history of the two parties to the dispute is certainly one reason. Another: China is mindful of the tense geopolitical situation. A nod to the Americans: Beijing is backing down on the Ukraine conflict. (case)
