As gas shortages threaten Germany, the government is considering drastic measures. This includes the acquisition of North Stream 2 on German soil. But it is not so easy – after all, they fear the Kremlin’s revenge.

The German government is plotting to drive Russian President Vladimir Putin (69) insane: it wants to seize the German section of the North Stream 2 gas pipeline. Writes that spiegel.de. Berlin is exploring this drastic measure because the gas supply is no longer guaranteed.
There will be plans to seize part of the currently growing pipeline system in German territory and disconnect it from the rest of the pipeline. That’s 54 out of a total of 1240 kilometers.
The closed terminal at sea will be connected to a mobile LNG terminal where ships can unload their cargo. The gas will then flow directly into the completed supply network supplying the whole of Germany.
Due to the gas blockade, Germany is increasingly dependent on liquefied petroleum gas, which is transported by ship. But there is a problem: the two liquid gas terminals at Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel will not be completed in the future. You are very flexible with mobile platforms.
Whose pipe is it anyway?
But kidnapping is not that easy. Although it is possible to raise and cut the pipeline, it can lead to major environmental problems. Every change in the pipeline inevitably triggers a new project approval process, including an environmental impact assessment.
Property rights are also complex. Zord-based Nord Stream 2 is bankrupt and managed. So the question of pipe ownership is not clear.
Fear of Putin’s revenge
But there are also fears about Putin’s reaction. He could take military revenge, but he could also hijack German companies in Russia.
According to spiegel.de, the German government is taking a multifaceted approach: one option is to build a second pipeline parallel to Nordstream 2 to transport gas from a liquefied gas terminal to Germany.
Gas warning in Germany
Germany urgently depends on gas supply. Russia’s state energy company Gosprom has reduced its gas supply from a maximum of 167 million cubic meters a day to 67 million cubic meters a week.
So the gas alarm level was declared in Germany. There are three levels: pre-alert status, alert status and emergency status. In late March, the Ministry of Economy announced the first level, the initial alert level.
The alert status comes into effect when there is a disruption in gas supply or when there is an exceptionally high demand for gas, which can lead to a “significant deterioration in the gas supply situation”.
Commenting on this, Economy Minister Robert Hebeck, 52, said: “Gas is no longer a rarity in Germany. However, the security of distribution is currently guaranteed. Among other things, he called for the service of heating systems. This saves up to 15 percent. (gf)
