A hearty bite of a delicious burger, and packed in a bag of fries – it ends up in Russia’s new fast food restaurants. Because the copy of the new Russian McDonald’s moves from one embarrassment to the next.
A few days ago the new chain Vkusno & Tochka was announced, which translates as “nice and ready”. Plated burgers were served. Now guests also have to do without fries.
So far about 50 branches are missing some golden yellow potato sticks. This is reported by several Russian media. There is a shortage of proper potato varieties.
No more potato imports
Filling should only be available again in the fall. That’s why some branches are temporarily no longer offering fries. According to a report by Vkusno & Tochka to the state news agency Tass, customers “will have to switch to other side dishes for tastier menus”.
The company said it wants to use Russian potatoes to produce its own fries. However, 2021 was an exceptionally poor harvest year for Russian potatoes.
Meanwhile, according to the company, it has become “impossible to import potatoes from other markets” to overcome the ban. Vkusno & Tochka mention the economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the West, but without naming them.
All 800 McDonald’s branches were closed
The Russian Ministry of Agriculture responded immediately. Officials issued a statement on Telegram announcing that there was “enough potatoes on the Russian market – including those that can be processed into fries.” Also, potatoes are in constant supply. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, “there is no disruption or possibility of a disruption”.
After the outbreak of war in Ukraine, McDonald’s pulled out of Russia. More than 800 branches have been closed across the country. In May, the US company sold its restaurants to a local franchisee. He later relaunched around 50 branches under a new name.
The company recently announced that all 850 former McDonald’s stores will reopen under the new name by September. Although McDonald’s has closed its Russia business, it retains the right to buy back its previous restaurants after 15 years. (jis)
