Another bloody crime took place in America on Monday morning (local time)! The shooting happened in Highland Park, near Chicago, Illinois. It was during a national holiday parade with many spectators. There was panic among the people.
“Stay out of the area – let the police and first responders do their jobs,” the Lake County Sheriff’s Office tweeted.
6 people are said to be seriously injured and 30 have been hospitalized. According to eyewitnesses, 20 to 25 shots were heard, “CNN” writes.
Did the man shoot from the roof?
Peter Kotonis was on his way to the parade to meet his family when he saw hundreds of people running as he approached the parade route. “It was confusing. I called my family to find out where they were. They were holed up in a building near the runway,” the man told the Chicago Tribune.
The shooter at the Highland Park parade is unknown. The shooter has not yet been caught. The suspect is described as white, between 18 and 20 years old. A gun was found at the crime scene. According to authorities, the shooter may have fired from the roof.
Television images showed people running. Highland Park’s mayor urged people to stay away from the city. The 4th of July festival has been cancelled.
A major violence problem in America
America has long struggled with mass gun violence. In late May, an 18-year-old gunman massacred a Texas elementary school. At the end of May, 19 children and 2 teachers were shot dead by police in the small town of Uvalde.
The crime reignited the debate over stricter gun laws in the United States. Guns are relatively easy to obtain in the United States. (Male)
