He really wanted to walk to the sea
Adelaide German stopped walking after several hours
Sean Krummel from Germany started a grand tour with sandals and wanted to walk to the sea. Millions followed the plan on TikTok – and how it suddenly failed.
He dropped out of college so he had plenty of time. Sean Krummel, 18, from Ludenscheid in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia came up with a unique idea. He liked to walk in sandals to the sea in the Netherlands. A whopping 360 kilometers!
He called his plan “Across the West.” On Tiktok, the German briefly explained what he’s up to and how he’s now on his way. Once to the sea. First destination is Wuppertal. A good 40 km walk. He has a backpack and a sleeping bag with him. Sean Crummel was optimistic.
And the video went viral. The first video generated more than seven million clicks. More videos followed. The network watched Shawn Crummel walk kilometer after kilometer in sandals.
An expensive place to sleep and sunbathe
But on the same day, the 18-year-old breaks down. Speaking of the evening: “Unfortunately I have to cancel the tour,” says Sean Crummel. Reason: No place to sleep for the night. There is a hotel room. But they cost 100 euros, which is too expensive for him. He has a “bad burn on his neck.”
Disappointment among his fans. At the same time, the sudden demolition caused a lot of ridicule. “He went through this project like his studies,” reads a comment on TikTok. Another wrote: “Just found the project and now it’s over?”
Sean Crummel takes it with humor. “I look at it all with a smile. I am surprised that this project is getting so much attention,” he says.T-Online». He doesn’t care about being teased. “For me it’s not about doing something or sitting around making big speeches.” He didn’t want to start a new degree, but an apprenticeship. He hasn’t found a place yet.
“We’ll do it again this summer.”
The slippery German hasn’t given up yet. He protested to get back on his feet. But: “It’s perfectly planned this time.” In the description of his profile he writes: “Thanks for everything! Let’s do it again this summer!”
He will speak again on Tuesday. He’ll be back in sandals Wednesday through Friday. Target: 100 kilometers. This time he was better prepared. In a video, Sean Crummel shows what he takes with him. Significantly more than his first tour. Below: toilet paper, several pairs of pants — and sunscreen. (jmh)
