Russia appears to be making further advances in eastern Ukraine, and the capture of the city of Lysisansk brings Russian troops one step closer to their goal: the complete capture of the entire Donbass, along with the two separatist regions of Luhansk and Donetsk.
Despite this, former Donetsk military chief Igor Girkin, 51, has strongly criticized Russia’s conduct of the war. She is very hesitant. He warned about Russian failure in Ukraine on his Telegram channel. In his critique, he didn’t shy away from inappropriately comparing Vladimir Putin (69) to former militia leader Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821).
Because instead of taking the initiative, the Kremlin will wait — and in vain — for a cease-fire agreement, Kirkin writes. “Like Napoleon in 1812, he — instead of acting as the situation demanded — waited hopelessly and gloomily for the negotiators from St. Petersburg.”
Russian “strike capability” is exhausted
According to Kirk, the French emperor has enough parallels. After capturing Moscow, he waited for Russia to surrender – and then had to retreat, crushing the French army in the process. Girkin sees a similar scenario for Russia: Donbass may be conquered, but Ukraine will not surrender without a fight.
Kirkin has repeatedly criticized Russian “special military action” as insufficient and called for mobilization in the country. He demands a shift to a war economy and repeatedly warns Moscow of military defeat. Because war cannot be won without a war economy.
After the capture of Lysizansk, the “offensive capacity” of the units fighting there was exhausted. He predicted that without new reserves and weapons, significant gains in the region could not be expected.

Kirkin has an international arrest warrant
Girkin is a former Russian intelligence agent who has been working in Ukraine since 2014. He was instrumental in Moscow’s annexation of Crimea and later in separatist efforts to break away from the Ukrainian Donbass. Among other things, he led the uprising against Kiev in eastern Ukraine as “defense minister” – and has been calling for war in Ukraine for years.
According to Western intelligence services, he was a colonel in the GRU, the Russian military intelligence service, and appeared in public under the pseudonym Igor Strelkov. An international arrest warrant has been issued for Kirkin in connection with the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. (chs)
